How Sweet the Sound

February 1, 2020 @ 3:00 pm

Celebrate the beginning of Black History Month by exploring the musical and spiritual connections between two Christian traditions: Eastern Orthodoxy and Black Gospel Music. The FREE event will showcase a newly composed setting of an Orthodox Vespers service in the style of black gospel music, written by Dr. Shawn Wallace, Associate Professor of Jazz Studies and Orthodox practitioner, and performed by experts in the black gospel tradition. The performance will be accompanied by two excellent speakers who will contextualize the performance. Fr. Moses Berry is a priest in the Orthodox Church of America, who specializes in the connections between African Orthodoxy and the African-American experience. Dr. Peter Bouteneff is the Professor of Systematic Theology at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Seminary. How Sweet the Sound will show the power of music to create unity and dialogue across traditions. We hope you will join us! For tickets and more information, see our website at https://howsweetthesound.net/
